The Italian Renaissance is the basis for revivals and interpretations, literal and fantastic. Any size can be realized with the component pieces of column, arch, beam, molding, etc. Proportions are vitally important in all period style architecture. They allow scaling of the house to work for smaller villas to larger mansions. The identifiable architectural details and assemblies of pedimental porches, lower pitched roofs, stucco and stone, symmetry, etc. combine to make the style unique.
The direct influence of the Greek and Roman stone temple building tradition was made exemplary by the Italians starting in the 15th Century. At the same time the rich architecture of the Moors and Ottoman empire affected stone and stucco palaces on the Mediterranean coastline. Many permutations of this style are seen from the early Gothic to Baroque periods of Western Architecture to modern day simplifications which are loosely termed 'Mediterranean".
