Classical Precedent
The Italian Renaissance was the model for luxury villas, mansions and palaces that have been emulated for hundreds of years. From Rome and Florence the love of art and architecture spread northward to Germany, France and England and inspired countless imitations. The massing, pediments and details of Greek and Roman temples were 'affixed' to flat structural walls to create an order of architecture whose rules one must abide by in order to yield results at any scale. Masons and sculptors turned architects created masterpieces based on the ideal of the human body. Naturally that ideal resulted in symmetrical facades and plans.
Clay tile roofs, stucco and stone exterior treatments with columns and arches and lavish interior design based on Etruscan grotesques and excavated Roman Palaces which used multicolored tile and stone and painted murals were astonishing feats of art that nobility, the merchant class, and the Catholic Church and clergy were drawn to imitate from Palatial residences to smaller private villas.
